University of Michigan Events on Sugar Island
This staged reading discusses the struggle to gain tribal jurisdiction during the re-authorization of VAWA and it’s importance in the fight against domestic violence. It recounts real stories–hardships and triumphs–of Native men and women.
Special thanks to all the men and women who performed and the musicians: Mike Pilcher (drummer), Josh Homing (drummer), and Amber Belonga (singer). And thank you to Cecil and Jackie for welcoming us into your community and teaching us so much.

Four student wrote and performed shows about, and in conversation with, our experiences on Sugar Island. These four pieces were staged in one week and performed in conjunction with a staged reading of Sliver of a Full Moon by Mary Kathryn Nagel.
